Frequently asked questions

Short, honest answers to the questions readers ask us most. Each links to the guide with the full detail.

Is it legal to buy rare plants online?

Generally yes, provided the plants are nursery-propagated and any CITES paperwork needed for international shipments is in place. Avoid wild-collected stock and unusually cheap "rarities". See rare flowers for sourcing tips.

Why do my succulents keep rotting?

Almost always overwatering combined with compost that holds too much moisture. Use a mix that is at least half mineral and let it dry completely between waterings. Our succulent guide explains growing seasons.

Can a banana plant survive winter outdoors?

Musa basjoo can. Its rhizome survives under deep mulch in many temperate areas, and wrapping the stem lets it keep height. Tender species such as Ensete need frost-free shelter. Details in exotic foliage.

What makes a flower good for pollinators?

Accessible pollen and nectar — usually single rather than double flowers — plus a long season and a mix of flower shapes. See pollinators and pots.

When should I water lithops?

Mainly in late summer and autumn, when they grow and flower. Keep them dry while the old leaf pair shrivels in winter and spring.

Which fragrant plants smell strongest at night?

Nicotiana sylvestris, night-scented stock and sweet rocket release most of their scent at dusk to attract moths. Plant them near seating or open windows.

What size pot is best for unusual plants?

Larger than you think. Bigger volumes of compost dry out and overheat more slowly, which makes care far easier. Always ensure drainage holes.

Do you accept payment to feature plants or nurseries?

No. We carry no advertising, sponsored content or affiliate links. Read more on our about page.

Where can I see unusual plants in person?

In the UK: Great Dixter, Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens, Tresco Abbey Garden, Beth Chatto's Gardens and Kew. In California: The Huntington's Desert Garden and Lotusland.
